Report On Emergency Seva - Railway Accident Near Penukonda

In one of the worst accidents in Andhra Pradesh in recent years, 25 people died and more than 60 injured, when the Bangalore bound Hampi Express rammed a stationary Goods Train just out side the Railway Station, PENUKONDA ( ANANTAPUR Dist. ) on 22 May 2012 at 3-20 A.M. The impact was so severe that the bogie next to the engine caught fire, while the second, third and fourth bogies derailed.

The Secretary of the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust, Sri Prasad Rao garu, after receiving a distress call from DSP of Penukonda, he immediately informed Sri Krishna Murthy, Zonal Coordinator ( Kothachruvu Zone) and Dr. T.Ramanjappa, District President of Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisations, Anantapur, about the accident. The District President immediately alerted the Sevadal from the nearest Sri Sathya Sai Seva Samithis i.e. KOTHACHERUVU, RODDAM, SOMANDE PALLI, DHARMAVARAM and HINDUPUR Samithis. The Sevadal immediately rushed to the accident site and intensively took part in Rescue and Relief Operations.

The details of the service rendered at Three Places are as follows.

Service at Accident Site, Railway Station, PENUKONDA

About 70 Sevadal participated in rescue and relief operations at the accident site. The details are as follows.

a) Handled the corpses of the victims from bogies to ambulance and then kept in mortuary at Govt. hospital, Penukonda. The corpses were placed with loving care in new white blanket, before transporting to hospital.
b) Helped in transporting injured persons in 108 Vehicles to different hospitals i.e. Bangalore, Hindupur and Penukonda hospitals.
c) Helped in transporting eight seriously injured persons to Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Medical Sciences, Puttaparthy by ambulance and private vehicles, for better treatment.
d) Breakfast, coffee/tea were served to about 100 bereaved family members and injured persons.
e) More than 2000 water pockets and biscuits were distributed to injured persons, passengers, Railway rescue team members, Police and other officials, who were on duty.

f) Later in the day, Pulihora ( food ) pockets were also served to Railway rescue team members, Police and other officials.

Service at Govt. Hospital, Penukonda

About 15 Sevadal participated in service at Govt. hospital, Penukonda.

g) Helped in contacting the relatives/friends of the injured persons and provided all the care and love needed at that hour.
h) Water, bread and fruits were served to the injured persons.
i) Helped in moving corpses of the victims from ambulance to mortuary .
j) Sevadal did the great service with utmost dedication and love till all the corpses were handed over to their relatives and all the injured persons were discharged from the hospital.

Service at Govt. Hospital, Hindupur

About 15 Sevadal participated in service at Govt. hospital, Hindupur.

k) Helped in admitting about 20 injured persons from 108 Vehicles into Govt. hospital and also further transportation to Bangalore hospitals.
l) Assisted in communicating with the relatives/friends of the injured persons.
m) Washed blood stains on the clothes of injured persons and also distributed new clothes ( sarees, pants and shirts, chudidaar and pyjamas etc. ) to few injured persons.
n) Water, bread, fruits, cool drinks and food were served to injured persons.
o) Sevadal were present till all the injured persons were discharged from the hospital.
All the Sevadal took part in this great service to humanity with a personal care and love , with Divine Guidance and Blessings of our Bhagawan, Sri Sathya Sai Baba.
